Energy and Education Discussion with Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith

On January 11, 2007 members of RMI’s Board of Directors met with Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith for a 2 hour discussion on key manufacturing issues. Energy and Education were the main topics of discussion with Energy being the topic for most of the discussion. Tom Russo, Plant Manager, Mittal Steel spoke about the urgency around energy due to increased cost. Tom Gallagher, Plant Manger, GM Powertrain-Baltimore Transmission, indicated that conserving energy and energy reduction is a key value that reflects the GM corporate values.

Actions Items:
RMI is hosting a 3 part series called Lean and Green - Energy for Maryland Manufacturers. The first session is Energy Conservation – Wise Choices for Using Energy scheduled for February 23 from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm.

CCBC President Dr. Sandra Kurtinitus and TIME Center Director Ed Fangman, were congratulated for the college and TIME Center’s role in creating an Engineering Technology Degree that will serve the manufacturing industry. RMI also thanked Baltimore County Superintendent of Public Schools, Dr. Joe Hairston for bringing principals and teachers to last year’s innovation conference and for inviting speakers from RMI to address school principals.

There was a lot of discussion about the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education (MBRT) and how they are helping to promote careers to teens. County Executive Smith encouraged companies to get involved with MBRT and he underscored the successful work they are doing to get young people engaged in careers exploration. Since 1999, the MBRT Speakers Bureau consisting of 2,500 business people has made presentations to 138,000 9th grade students in 140 high schools in 24 school districts. U.S. Senator Ben Cardin to Kick-Off Conference - U.S. Senator Ben Cardin will be the keynote speaker at the Regional Manufacturing Institute's (RMI) Greening the Supply Chain conference to be held on June 3 at the BWI Marriott in Linthicum, Maryland. RMI is co-hosting the event with the EPA Green Suppliers Network and the Maryland-Asia Environmental Partnership. This public-private forum will showcase initiatives that Baxter International, General Motors, Steelcase and Johnson Controls have made to green their supply chains. The initiative is having a huge impact on the thousands of suppliers and vendors who want to make sure they meet the standards that have been committed to by these Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). "In terms of public policy, one of the most important steps businesses can take is to commit to greening the supply chain," said U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin, a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. "Collectively, businesses have power and by encouraging their suppliers to adopt certain environmentally responsible practices, our nation's manufacturers can have an enormous impact on improving our environment and on setting new eco-friendly standards," he added.

Fall 2007 Conference A Success Maryland stakeholders from business, government and academia heard from such Maryland-based manufacturers as General Motors, Lockheed Martin, Johnson Controls, Coca Cola Constellation NewEnergy and Marlin Steel Wire Products who provided examples of how their green manufacturing initiatives have increased their profitability while also benefiting the environment. Both federal and Maryland state government agencies provided insights on their programs, some of them free, to help companies become more efficient and less polluting to help industry better understand “how to go green.”
Nearly 200 people including students, teachers, and leaders of business government and labor participated in RMI’s Women and Minorities in Manufacturing and Engineering program hosted by Northrop Grumman. VIEW a VIDEO from this event...
Energy Conservation is the way to immediate cost savings. That was the message at the Feb 23rd Energy Conservation – Wise Choices for Manufacturers program. One hundred nine people attended the event.
