Energy and Education Discussion with
Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith
On January 11, 2007 members of RMI’s Board
of Directors met with Baltimore County
Executive Jim Smith for a 2 hour discussion on key manufacturing
issues. Energy and Education were the main topics
of discussion with Energy being the topic for
most of the discussion. Tom Russo, Plant Manager,
Mittal Steel spoke about the urgency around energy
due to increased cost. Tom Gallagher, Plant Manger,
GM Powertrain-Baltimore Transmission, indicated
that conserving energy and energy reduction is
a key value that reflects the GM corporate values.
Actions Items:
RMI is hosting a 3 part series called
Lean and Green - Energy for Maryland Manufacturers.
The first session is Energy Conservation – Wise
Choices for Using Energy scheduled for February
23 from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm.
CCBC President Dr. Sandra Kurtinitus and TIME Center Director Ed Fangman, were congratulated for the college and TIME Center’s role in creating an Engineering Technology Degree that will serve the manufacturing industry. RMI also thanked Baltimore County Superintendent of Public Schools, Dr. Joe Hairston for bringing principals and teachers to last year’s innovation conference and for inviting speakers from RMI to address school principals.
There was a lot of discussion about the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education (MBRT) and how they are helping to promote careers to teens. County Executive Smith encouraged companies to get involved with MBRT and he underscored the successful work they are doing to get young people engaged in careers exploration. Since 1999, the MBRT Speakers Bureau consisting of 2,500 business people has made presentations to 138,000 9th grade students in 140 high schools in 24 school districts.
