Going $Green with Maryland Manufacturing

Fall 2007 Conference A Big Success Over 300 Maryland Stakeholders Participate in the Launching of Maryland Industry Green Movement! Maryland stakeholders from business, government and academia heard from such Maryland-based manufacturers as General Motors, Lockheed Martin, Johnson Controls, Coca Cola Constellation NewEnergy and Marlin Steel Wire Products who provided examples of how their green manufacturing initiatives have increased their profitability while also benefiting the environment. Both federal and Maryland state government agencies provided insights on their programs, some of them free, to help companies become more efficient and less polluting to help industry better understand “how to go green.” The audience heard from the author of the “Wholly Sustainable Enterprise,” Chris Park, a partner at Deloitte Consulting, who provided an overview of what’s driving the global sustainability movement and why companies should take it seriously. They also heard from Peter Gourlay, President of the newly launched Maryland Asia Environmental Partnership on the potential environmental catastrophe looming Asia, particularly in China and India. Gourlay discussed how Maryland industry, government and academia have a great opportunity to help these regions with lessons learned, technology and equipment to address their massive needs for water, clean energy and pollution prevention know-how. At the luncheon keynote address, Tom Gallagher, Plant Manager from General Motors’s White Marsh transmission plant, discussed industry’s first two-mode hybrid transmission for GM’s full-size SUVs and pickups. He also highlighted the fact that the GM facility has officially achieved “landfill free” status – meaning our plant will no longer send any waste from the production operations to landfills. Maryland’s Regional Manufacturing Institute launched its $Green Manufacturing initiative at the “Going $Green with Maryland Manufacturing” conference on November 6 at Martins Valley Mansion in Hunt Valley Maryland. "I commend RMI for their strong leadership in the green manufacturing area. Their peer-to-peer information exchange will help fast-track the implementation of environmentally beneficial improvements,” said Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith. “We are reaching out across industry sectors to mobilize the business community on this initiative, said Dr. Michael Galiazzo, Executive Director of the Regional Manufacturing Institute. “It’s vital the companies understand the green revolution that is occurring and the opportunities that presents in terms of profitability and global competitiveness,” he said. |

| EVENT TESTIMONIALS |
“The event had really high value. Our team learned a lot about what others were doing. We came to the conference because we were very interested in what others were doing on going green, but not sure how to proceed. We got some really good ideas are now bringing them back to Lion Brothers.” “The $Green Manufacturing conference reminded me why I come to the RMI events; generally speaking every time I attend I get value. Yesterday’s conference wasn’t just a recital of industry jargon; presenters were focusing in on their own real world experiences. It was very useful for the audience which had so many questions on how to get started on this going green initiative.” “This is the start of something neat. My take aways are that green is related to power consumption and for manufacturing going lean has serendipitous benefit of going green. I learned that there are lots of resources available and opportunities to go green and make money.” “This conference was right on the money. This is the time and the presentations from Johnson Controls, the Maryland Asia Environmental Partnership and Coca Cola really brought value home to the value proposition of going green.” “All the credit in the world to RMI. This was absolutely right group, the right theme, and very timely. You are on to something and a RMI is a potential leader for the nation. People are really interested in how to do it now.” “RMI always has its pulse on manufacturing for our state and the manufacturing community as a whole. The timing is particularly important as we hear about the greening movement. We‘ve got some innovative green resources in the state and Maryland has a great opportunity to distinguish itself from the rest of the country as a green leader.” |
