NEW REALITY MEANS U.S. MANUFACTURERS MUST BE INNOVATIVE - OR PERISH The media frenzy about loss of jobs and outsourcing has painted a bleak picture of U.S. manufacturing for the general public. Yet, the United States remains the world's largest exporter of manufactured goods. But although the country holds this leadership in manufacturing, by no means is that position safe. Globalization has made the world smaller; in one sense, it has erased borders. Technology transfer has enabled countries in Asia and Eastern Europe to compete vigorously with the United State for the world's manufacturing pie.
