A Three-Day Workshop Series On Inventory Management
December 18^th – 20^th, 2007      8:30am – 5:00pm      Loyola College Graduate Center

Basics of Inventory Management - Tuesday December 18^th 8:30 am – Noon: In this workshop participants work through three case studies and four hands-on exercises. Upon completion, participants will be able to perform: an ABC analysis, EOQ formula, the relationship between ordering and carrying costs, the quantity discount model, the reorder point system formula, costs associated with stockouts, establish safety stock levels, the relationship between independent and dependent demand as well as MRP and MPS systems, and balance real-world decisions vs. the mathematical models presented.
Distribution Inventory Management - Tuesday December 18^th 1:30 pm – 5:00 pm: This workshop focuses on the distribution network model and includes interactive exercises to present the fundamental concepts associated with making distribution a strategic function. Specifically, participants will learn Push, Pull, and DRP replenishment methods, how to determine stocking levels and locations, site selection, centralized vs. decentralized purchasing, qualitative and quantitative forecasting models, Just-In-Time/Lean trends, inventory reduction methods, proper housekeeping, and material handling reduction.
Physical Inventory - Wednesday December 19^th 8:30 am – Noon: This workshop shows participants the essential steps to performing an accurate physical inventory. Activities include preparing counters, the materials to be counted, and the facilities, equipment, and system that will be used in conducting the physical inventory. Participants will learn how to conduct a physical inventory, keep it under control, reconcile differences, and report results. Samples of tracking tags, facility maps, and checklists are provided. This course guides the way to implementing an effective physical inventory.
Cycle Counting - Wednesday December 19^th 1:30 pm – 5:00 pm: In this workshop, the participants will learn how to implement or improve a cycle counting program and what the real purpose of cycle counting is: finding and fixing the causes of inventory errors. Also included are several methods for selecting items to count, using correct accounting techniques, and reconciling any outstanding transactions. In addition, the participant will learn various reporting methods to illustrate the results of the cycle counting program to employees and management.
Inventory Essentials for Manufacturers - Thursday December 20^th 8:30 am – Noon: To effectively use a Material Requirements Planning (MRP) system, it is essential to understand how bills of material (BOMs) are structured and how MRP calculates requirements. This course includes instruction and exercises so students can practice these important concepts. From structuring simple BOMs to creating phantom bills, modular bills, and super bills, the participant will learn many ways to use BOMs, how to calculate material requirements, and exception messages that MRP systems frequently include.
Introduction to Lean - Thursday December 20^th 1:30 pm – 5:00 pm: This workshop presents procedures companies use to identify and eliminate waste to become lean. It also covers a variety of tools that are used and covers such topics as the transparent workplace, lean process improvement, lean product development, Just-in-Time, controlling processes, and continuous improvement.

Half-Day Workshops are only $109 for APICS’ members and $119 for non-members!

Fall 2007 Conference A Success
Maryland stakeholders from business, government and academia heard from such Maryland-based manufacturers as General Motors, Lockheed Martin, Johnson Controls, Coca Cola Constellation NewEnergy and Marlin Steel Wire Products who provided examples of how their green manufacturing initiatives have increased their profitability while also benefiting the environment. Both federal and Maryland state government agencies provided insights on their programs, some of them free, to help companies become more efficient and less polluting to help industry better understand “how to go green.”

Presentation Discussion:
This presentation provides attendees with the means to align their purchasing and production plans with market demand. It is based on LEAN concepts that minimize all inventories: raw materials (RM), work-in-process (WIP) and finished goods (FG). The facilitator will engage participants in hands-on examples that demonstrate the calculation of material flow from receiving parts, through sub-assembly, and ultimately end item production. Attendees will learn:

   The concepts behind demand-based manufacturing.

     The requirements needed to execute flow.

     How to calculate flow rates for RM, WIP and FG.

     How to sequence mixed-model production (MMP) to match demand.

     An algorithm that effectively sequences MMP.

Note: participants will require pencils and calculators to perform the math exercises (or be good at math!).
