TIME Center - Lean Partnership Course Descriptions

LEAN PARTNERSHIP -COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Trainers for the one day workshops are experienced lean consultants who will provide an in-depth introduction, simulations and hands-on applications in each course. This “learn-do-apply” approach gives workshop participants a good working knowledge of the various lean techniques and ways to implement them in their own work settings.

Introduction to Lean Principles
Provides an overview of the organizational applications and benefits of lean principles and practices. Participants will experience a variety of lean tools and simulation exercises, and identify possible applications in their own organizations. Srategies for implementing lean principles in organizations will be discussed.

5S—Visual Controls
Presents the rationale and value of visual workplace organization and 5S processes (Sort, Set-In-Order, Shine, Standardize, & Sustain). Participants will learn techniques for creating a visual workplace, methods and tools for implementing a standardized workplace, and strategies for sustaining workplace changes from initial communication through implementation and process auditing.

Value Stream Mapping
Presents techniques to identify and map the information and material flow for a business or production process in order to assess the value it adds to the product. Participants will use current and future value stream mapping techniques to streamline work processes and reduce wastes in order to cut lead times and reduce operating costs. Applications to various types of organizations will be discussed.

Lean Office
Provides an overview of lean concepts, and their application to office, support and administrative processes. Participants will be introduced to specific lean concepts, and apply them in a simulated office kaizen event. The use of office Value Stream Maps will reinforce their importance in improvement initiatives.

Mistake Proofing & Workplace Standards
Introduces approaches to detecting defects and the benefit of implementing mistake proofing throughout the organization. In addition, approaches to collecting and developing the very best work/performance methods and applying them to their tasks will be introduced. Participants will learn everyday mistake proofing devices and methods to identify, prioritize and implement them and how to minimize process variation to improve safety, teamwork, training, and overall productivity.

Cellular/Flow Systems
Identifies the benefits of cellular or flow processes as compared to traditional production and business approaches. Participants will learn techniques, measurement processes and support systems needed to design and implement the most efficient combination of equipment, materials and processes to maximize value-added activities and minimize waste.

U.S. Senator Ben Cardin to Kick-Off Conference - U.S. Senator Ben Cardin will be the keynote speaker at the Regional Manufacturing Institute's (RMI) Greening the Supply Chain conference to be held on June 3 at the BWI Marriott in Linthicum, Maryland. RMI is co-hosting the event with the EPA Green Suppliers Network and the Maryland-Asia Environmental Partnership. This public-private forum will showcase initiatives that Baxter International, General Motors, Steelcase and Johnson Controls have made to green their supply chains. The initiative is having a huge impact on the thousands of suppliers and vendors who want to make sure they meet the standards that have been committed to by these Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). "In terms of public policy, one of the most important steps businesses can take is to commit to greening the supply chain," said U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin, a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. "Collectively, businesses have power and by encouraging their suppliers to adopt certain environmentally responsible practices, our nation's manufacturers can have an enormous impact on improving our environment and on setting new eco-friendly standards," he added.

Fall 2007 Conference A Success Maryland stakeholders from business, government and academia heard from such Maryland-based manufacturers as General Motors, Lockheed Martin, Johnson Controls, Coca Cola Constellation NewEnergy and Marlin Steel Wire Products who provided examples of how their green manufacturing initiatives have increased their profitability while also benefiting the environment. Both federal and Maryland state government agencies provided insights on their programs, some of them free, to help companies become more efficient and less polluting to help industry better understand “how to go green.”
Nearly 200 people including students, teachers, and leaders of business government and labor participated in RMI’s Women and Minorities in Manufacturing and Engineering program hosted by Northrop Grumman. VIEW a VIDEO from this event...
Energy Conservation is the way to immediate cost savings. That was the message at the Feb 23rd Energy Conservation – Wise Choices for Manufacturers program. One hundred nine people attended the event.
